ACTIVITIES

Over the past quarter century, the Council has sponsored five Pacific-wide conferences, six regional symposia and two dozen workshops in different countries; compiled and published 60 regional geoscience and resources maps with accompanying explanatory booklets, and organized a geospatial data project in East Asia.

The Circum-Pacific Map Project initially focused on compiling geologic, tectonic and resources data. It subsequently was broadened to include geohazards, natural hazards, and environmental data and extended to cover the Arctic and Antarctic regions. The Council has published 16 volumes in its Earth Science Series and five volumes of Circum-Pacific Conference Transactions.

Conferences

The CPC sponsors and facilitates many conferences and workshops to challenge leaders from government, industry and academia to jointly address the mutual problems related to the growing demand in the Pacific region for living and non-living resources.

The primary conference that CPC supports is GeoHab the (Geological and Biological Mapping) organization that annually convenes conferences not only around the Pacific Basin, but in Europe and Latin America as well. Recent conferences were held in Roma, Italy, Salvador-Bahia, Brazil, and Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada with the next conference to be held in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Seafloor Geomorphology

The second edition of 'Seafloor Geomorphology as Benthic Habitat: GeoHab Atlas of seafloor geomorphic features and benthic habitats' will be of interest to environmental managers, ecologists, fishermen, seabed mining and petroleum explorers, conservationists and scientists.

Projects

The CPC regularly receives requests to support or initiate projects with the Pacific region, under the supervision of one or more Director(s). Such projects entail the compilation and publication of a map or map series, organization of workshops in and around the Pacific Basin or worldwide.

Projects include specific topics of the Directors’ interest and facilitate the collection and interpretation of new data through the CPC’s financial capabilities and facilitation of scientific programs.

Printed Maps

The Council maintains a limited supply of its Circum-Pacific Map Projects maps, which can be supplied upon request. The CPC in conjunction with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) has been engaged in electronically scanning the maps. Interested parties are encouraged to contact the AAPG in regard to electronic availability of CPC maps.
